Someone saved all the amazing free shows for the end of the summer. Three awesome women will be performing this afternoon, making this a don’t-miss Central Park show. St. Vincent, of course, is the fabulous songstress behind last year’s Actor. She’s also got great taste in music videos. tUnE-YaRds also came out with one of the most innovative albums of 2009, Bird-Brains. And Basia Bulat is a Canadian-based singer-songwriter. Check out her beautiful songs on her MySpace.

What a star-studded Friday night. On an evening of about six good concerts, this one at Bowery Ballroom is the place to be. First of all, Twin Sister’s 80s pop tinged music is making a huge splash right now, so this is the time to go see them. tUnE-YaRds was on the tip of everyone’s tongue at the end of 2009, and any opportunity to check out her weirdo sort of folk tunes should absolutely be taken. Zola Jesus is not my thing, but she fits in well with the rest of the bill. If you’re a fan of the Knife or Kate Bush you might dig Zola Jesus. There’s an MP3 below, which I don’t really like at all (too plodding, not enough movement, the build brings no release to my ears), but you can check it out if you’re curious. Xiu Xiu is one of those bands that you know was really important and just coming up about six years ago when you were still in college and listened to them because the album was in your campus radio station but probably still didn’t listen enough. In other words, they’re a band I’m not too terribly familiar with, but feel guilty for not being more well-versed in. They play a lot of pretty strange stuff, and are oftentimes quite a lot fun. This show will be a really entertaining night of out-of-the-box music, and a good sampling of how 80s synth and pop is invading rock music today.
